Our goals

As you’d expect, Southern Cross Primary Care (SCPC) has looked long and hard at the current market situation and existing GP networks. We know that GPs value their independence and have no desire to lose clinical autonomy or participation in management to overseas corporate owners.

And, while SCPC wants to be in the general practice business, we don’t want to be in the business of running general practices.

Our vision is to shape the future of general practice in New Zealand by developing a model of quality primary care based on scale, effectiveness, and horizontal and vertical collaboration.

Our specific objectives include:

• affords greater and more sustainable remuneration to practitioners
• provides for reinvestment in the continuous improvement of services, the business model and systems, and professional development
• provides a professionally attractive environment, including career pathways and professional development to attract outstanding clinicians and multi-disciplinary team members.

• develop new services and revenue opportunities for primary care
• show strength of commitment by investing in GP-owned practices to help ensure its ongoing success and the expansion of the network
• leverage the experience and business acumen of already successful general practitioners, practice personnel and Southern Cross to build a sustainable network of practices
• develop patient-focused, high quality care, that will meet changing needs and taking advantage of new technology
• use this continuously improving service model to attract motivated health care practitioners to work within the network
• harness the influence of clinicians on patient pathways, leveraging primary care services and their impact on the vertical and horizontal integration of services
• work with other Southern Cross businesses to identify opportunities to deliver cost-effective services through partner practices.
